In a thrilling Massachusetts Division 5 MIAA semifinal on November 21, 2025, Jake Banda, a Senior running back and linebacker for Shawsheen Valley Tech, delivered a standout performance that clinched his recognition as the Top Play of the Week in New England. Facing North Reading in a dramatic showdown, Banda showcased his versatility and tenacity, leading his team to a hard-fought 22-14 victory.
Banda, known for his physical running style, consistently wore down the Hornets’ defense throughout the game. With 38 carries, he racked up an impressive 266 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns. Every drive relied heavily on his downhill running, featuring a mix of inside zone, power, and counter plays, reflecting his ability to read blocks and break tackles. His contributions were pivotal in the second half, where his relentless pursuit of yardage helped shift momentum in favor of the Rams.
The defining moment came in overtime, where Banda extended Shawsheen’s lead with his third rushing touchdown. However, it was his defensive prowess that sealed the game; on North Reading’s first snap of overtime, Banda, now playing safety, intercepted a pass intended for the receiver, ending the game and triggering celebrations on the Shawsheen sideline. This remarkable play not only highlighted his dual-threat capability but also solidified his status as a key player in high-stakes situations. Jake plays as both a running back (RB) and linebacker (LB) mainly, but will also be put in other positions to excel his team during a game. Defensively, he exhibits aggression and physicality. He quickly reads and responds to plays, demonstrating solid tackling skills, the ability to anticipate blocks, complete tackles, and take efficient pursuit angles. As a runner, he concludes his runs with physicality. Additionally, he can serve as an effective blocker and pass protector when necessary.
With accolades such as the 2024 MHSFCA Division All-State Team selection, Banda continues to shine, and his performance this week solidifies his potential for another outstanding season in 2025, making him a player to watch.
